FROM ARRIVAL TO EVERYDAY RIDES

Singapore MRT for tourists: cards, fares & buses

The easiest transport setup is one you can use consistently. Plan the route, choose an accepted payment method, and keep a fallback for luggage-heavy journeys or arrivals outside operating hours.

Start with your destination, then choose the route

Look up the actual hotel or attraction entrance, not just its neighbourhood. Compare the complete journey: walking to a station, transfers, and the final walk can matter more than the time on the train. For a short sightseeing trip, group visits along a sensible route. A slightly longer direct journey can feel easier than several transfers with luggage. Save your accommodation address and a route screenshot before leaving airport Wi-Fi.

Paying with a contactless bank card

SimplyGo says foreign-issued Mastercard and Visa credit or debit cards can be tapped directly for train and public bus travel. It lists a S$0.60 Foreign Bank Card Admin Fee per day of use, in addition to the fare. Your bank may also apply its own currency conversion or overseas transaction charges. Confirm that your card is enabled for overseas contactless use before relying on it.

Use the same card or the same device for the entire journey. A phone wallet and the underlying physical card should not be swapped between entry and exit. Keep other contactless cards away from the reader so that you know which payment method was used. Carry a backup if your issuer declines a transaction.

Tap in, tap out, and keep the method consistent

At MRT gates, tap to enter and tap again to leave. On buses, tap when boarding and before alighting. Follow the reader’s confirmation and ask staff for help if a gate does not open, rather than repeatedly changing cards. Missing an entry or exit can affect the fare charged. Each traveller should have their own usable payment method; do not assume a single card will cover a group at the same time.

Stored-value cards and tourist passes

A stored-value travel card can be useful if your bank card is unsuitable or you prefer to separate travel spending. Check purchase cost, top-up options and refund conditions before buying. A tourist pass may suit a ride-heavy schedule, but unlimited rides do not automatically mean better value. Compare the current pass terms with your planned journeys, including any exclusions. Avoid buying on the assumption that every premium service or attraction transfer is included.

What will a journey cost?

There is no single flat fare that describes every MRT and bus journey. Use the current official fare information or journey planner for your route. This guide does not publish a fare table because fare revisions and journey rules need active maintenance. Distinguish the transport fare, the foreign-card daily fee and any bank charge when checking your statement. Aggregated bank postings may not appear as one transaction per ride.

Arriving at Changi Airport

Check your terminal, landing time, hotel location and available connections before choosing rail. Allow time for immigration, bags and the journey to the departure point. Do not assume that a late flight leaves enough time for the last train. Use our Changi Airport to city guide to compare MRT routes, taxis, Grab, TADA and private transfers, then confirm current options with the airport.

With several suitcases, small children or limited mobility, compare the whole door-to-door journey. A taxi or app-booked car may reduce transfers, but quoted prices can vary with time and demand. Follow official pickup directions and confirm the vehicle and destination before travelling.

Choose buses when the route helps

Buses can save a long walk or connect places that are awkward by rail. Check the direction and stop number, because opposite sides of the same road serve different journeys. Watch your progress and signal before your stop. Give yourself extra time in traffic; a tight timed attraction booking is a poor moment to experiment with an unfamiliar route.

A simple transport checklist

Before leaving: save the address, check the route, charge your phone and bring a backup payment method. During the trip: use one consistent card or device and tap at both ends. Before a late return: check service availability instead of assuming trains run all night. For accessibility needs, confirm lifts and the destination approach with the relevant operator; this guide has not audited individual routes.
